FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Gaby Leon

I think I will always be attracted to some elements of grunge. Whether it is the embracing of androgyny, thrift shop aesthetic or the loose-layered look that you can hide behind, something about it always catches my eye. I can definitely relate, as I’ve never been one to dress very flashy, so this style ensemble has always inspired me. I would be lying if I said I don’t have a go-to camo jacket and a (very!) worn out pair of studded loafers. This Fashionista pairs a black tank top and jeans with a camouflage jacket and deep red spiked loafers from a personal favorite, Unif. With Los Angeles’ June gloom well underway, these must-have pieces are perfect to comfortably and stylishly go about a gloomy, busy day.

Name: Gaby Leon

Year: Freshman

Major: Visual Communications

College Fashionista: How would you describe your style?

Gaby Leon: Comfortable, rocky, edgy, simple and a little bit of grunge.

CF: What is a major fashion faux pas in your opinion?

GL: UGGs, definitely. Crocs, those high-wasted “extra-cheeky” shorts.

CF: Where do you usually shop?

GL: Urban Outfitters or Buffalo Exchange.

CF: Is there something or someone who inspires your style?

GL: Gwen Stefani, definitely.

CF: What will you be wearing a lot this summer?

GL: High-waisted shorts, maxi skirts, maxi dresses and maybe some Hawaiian print.

How To:  To begin channeling your inner grungy material girl, start with your first layer, a loose gray tee and jeans to keep it simple and comfortable. Once you have a simple slate to start with, begin layering with a grunge style statement pieces like a flannel and a camouflage jacket. Finish off your look with some cool yet relaxed shoes like these creeper style shoes from ASOS. If you’re trying to go for a grungy look, remember that it derived from angsty teenagers wanting cheap, comfortable and layered clothes. From here you can mismatch a bit, throw on a flannel and you’re set.
