I walked away from this interview with a heavy dose of inspiration coming from all sides of the spectrum. The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising right in the fashion district of Downtown LA never fails to exceed my expectations with its wide range of diverse and fashionable students. This Fashionisto did not fail to impress with his grungy, European inspired ensemble with trendy American elements. He is wearing a red baseball cap, a band tee, a chunky statement necklace, gray drawstring shorts, Keds and finishes off his look with a Mulberry bag. Check out the boy behind the look, who effortlessly meshes a baseball cap with a chunky necklace and represents the right attitude for cool edgy city style.

Name: Keith Tovey

Year: Senior

Major: Fashion Design

CollegeFashionista: What are you wearing and where is it from?

Keith Tovey: My necklace is from Forever 21, my shirt is from a band called Yelle, which is a French pop band, my shorts and hat are from H&M, my shoes are Keds and my bag is Mulberry.

CF: How would you describe your style?

KT: I’m inspired by probably the British punk era, that’s what I’m into right now. But kind of adding a little bit of American influence by adding the baseball caps. My style changes daily. Some days I feel grungy, some days I’m really preppy, rocker-ish. I like European all the way, I’m moving to London next year. I love the European look.

CF: What will you be wearing a lot this summer?

KT: I’m going for really industrial like mixing cut off tanks and I’m really into chunky jewelry right now, in fact I just went and bought a huge eagle necklace!  My favorite items in my closet are my bags, especially my Mulberry bag. All of my bags in general, but this is a new purchase.

CF: What’s a major fashion faux pas in your opinion?

KT: It’s pretty much a fashion faux pas is dressing for somebody else. Like, “Oh I’m going to look like this person.” No, you dress how you want to. And socks with sandals are really bad too.

CF: Do you have a fashion motto that you dress by?

KT: “Fashion is one of the greatest arts because you live your life by it.” – Carrie Bradshaw

How To: Fashionistos, it is now time for stars to be born and risks to be taken. When putting together your edgy city look don’t forget a casual graphic T-shirt and a bright baseball cap. If you’re feeling adventurous, top off your outfit with some statement jewelry and a faux leather bag for a stylish and perfect match!
